He hid her under the kitchen table of his four-year-old self; he tucked her behind the hum of a basement furnace. For a moment, it worked. They stood in the rain of a memory he hadn't thought of in decades.

But Eterno Resplandor de una Mente Sin Recuerdos (the Spanish title for Michel Gondry’s masterpiece) suggests a paradox that the English title only hints at. It speaks of radiance and light within a void.

The film argues that our experiences—even the painful ones—define who we are. The ending is famously debated as either a hopeful "okay" to trying again or a tragic cycle doomed to repeat itself.

"I could die right now, Clem. I'm just... happy."

As memories are deleted, Joel relives them in reverse. He re-experiences their breakup (Clementine saying, "Too many guys think I’m a concept, or I complete them, or I’m gonna make them alive. But I’m just a fucked-up girl who’s looking for my own peace of mind."). Then he goes to their happy times.
