The success of this film rests entirely on the shoulders of its leads, and they deliver exceptionally. Shailene Woodley gives a career-defining performance as Hazel. She avoids the trap of playing a "saintly sick person"; instead, she is prickly, funny, and deeply human.
If there is a fault (pun intended), it is that the film sometimes leans a bit too heavily into the "Manic Pixie Dream Girl/Boy" trope, making Augustus seem a little too perfect at times.
