The film begins in 1913, when Srinivasa Ramanujan (played by Dev Patel), a young and self-taught mathematician from India, sends his portfolio of mathematical work to Cambridge University. Professor G.H. Hardy (played by Jeremy Irons), a renowned mathematician, is impressed by Ramanujan's work and invites him to Cambridge to collaborate with him. The movie follows their journey as they work together to prove Ramanujan's mathematical theories and develop new ones.
