The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the first of three films adapting Tolkien’s 1937 novel. It introduces us to a younger Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), a comfort-loving hobbit who is recruited by the wizard Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) to join thirteen dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage).

The quality was imperfect. The colors were washed out, a watercolor version of Middle-earth. The shadows were blocky, pixelating into dark squares whenever Bilbo Baggins stepped into the gloom of Bag End.
