While mainstream gay organisations focus on legal briefs, trans-led groups like the Transgender Law Center and the Okra Project focus on the granular: paying for a trans youth’s hormone therapy, bailing a Black trans woman out of jail, or delivering groceries to a senior who is transitioning alone.

As of 2025, the transgender community is under an unprecedented attack. Over the last four years, hundreds of bills have been introduced in US state legislatures to ban gender-affirming care for minors, restrict trans athletes from sports, and force teachers to out trans students to parents.

Before the internet, LGBTQ culture flourished in underground bars. For trans people, these spaces were a double-edged sword. Gay bars offered refuge, but many enforced strict dress codes requiring patrons to match the gender on their ID. This forced trans people to create their own culture: the Ballroom scene . In recent years, much of the political friction surrounding LGBTQ+ rights has shifted specifically toward trans-inclusive healthcare and sports.

Johnson, a Black trans woman and drag queen, and Rivera, a Latinx trans woman, were at the forefront of the resistance against routine police brutality. In an era when "cross-dressing" laws were used to arrest anyone who did not conform to their assigned gender at birth, trans people were the most visible targets.
