Conversely, the esposa was the martyr, the long-suffering woman whose virtue was defined by her endurance and forgiveness. This dynamic reinforced the cultural importance of the family unit ( la familia ) above individual happiness, often resolving with the wife winning back her husband or forgiving him for the sake of the children.
