Sinhala cinema (Sri Lankan cinema in the Sinhala language) dates back to 1947. Its filmography is rich, spanning melodrama, social realism, comedy, and arthouse.
The journey began with Kadawunu Poronduwa (Broken Promise) in 1947. Despite its financial failure, it opened the door for a national cinema. However, it was Sir Lester James Peries who became the father of Sinhala cinema. His 1956 masterpiece Rekava (The Line of Destiny) was the first genuine artistic expression of Sri Lankan life, devoid of Indian melodrama. This film is still the cornerstone of any serious study.
